ADOLESCENT & PARENT TREATMENT (APT):
THERAPIST TRAINING

Date: TBC 2024, contact us to register interest
Location: Nurture Psychology, Parnell AKL
Facilitator: Dr Marion Roberts

Adolescent & Parent Treatment is an emerging psychological treatment alternative for adolescent eating disorders that blends a flexible family approach to re-feeding with individual psychological treatment for the adolescent. Read more about APT in an academic paper here and on the APT website here.

This 2-day advanced training is for experienced eating disorder therapists (e.g. registered psychologists, psychotherapists, mental health trained allied health therapists - see ANZAED practice & training standards for mental health professionals) who have a desire to extend the treatment options they offer to adolescent clients and their families.

Strong knowledge and experience working with adolescent eating disorders is assumed, together with a strong professional background in psychological therapy including the ability to apply family systems & developmental theory in the therapy room. Training & experience in FBT is preferred prerequisite.

This training fulfils the first component for accreditation as an APT therapist, with the second component being APT case supervision hours.

Trainings are in a small group setting in order to facilitate learning, therefore spaces are limited. Please contact us if you are unsure if you meet foundation therapist criteria for training. Enquiries are welcome via hello@nurturepsychology.co.nz or register via the link below.

GUIDED SELF-HELP CBT FOR BULIMIA NERVOSA:
primary care & therapist training

Date: 2nd half of 2024, please contact us to register interest
Location: Nurture Psychology, Parnell AKL
Facilitator: Dr Marion Roberts
Cost: $350 + GST (snacks & treatment book included)

Access to specialist eating disorder treatment is scarce across New Zealand, particularly outside of main urban areas. This one day training workshop aims to up-skill primary care clinicians (e.g. GP’s, mental health nurses), together with psychologists, counsellors & mental health trained allied health clinicians with skills to competently screen/assess for bulimia nervosa, and deliver a brief guided self-help intervention feasible for the primary or secondary care setting.

Guided self-help CBT (Cognitive behavioural therapy) for bulimia nervosa is an acceptable first line treatment per the NICE guidelines, involving 10x 30 minute “talking treatment” sessions, alongside patient use of a therapy book, across a 5-6 month period. For psychologists in private settings, the model can augment other therapeutic work, for example by being delivered alongside an anxiety or mood intervention.

The workshop will cover the following elements tailored to working with patients with bulimia nervosa; (morning) base therapeutic skills & rapport in this client group, screening & diagnostic assessment of bulimia nervosa, simple differential diagnosis, compassionate weighing, determining suitability for guided self-help treatment; (afternoon) evidence-base and competent delivery of guided self-help treatment for bulimia nervosa.

Trainings are in a small group setting (maximum 15) in order to facilitate learning, therefore spaces are limited. Enquiries are welcome via hello@nurturepsychology.co.nz or register via the link below.

*training via zoom may be offered depending on demand- please contact us to register your interest.

Cognitive behavioural therapy-enhanced for eating disorders (CBT-E): Therapist training

** 1 SPACE LEFT

2024 training round 1:
Date:
Thursday 4th & Friday 5th April, 2024, 9:30-4:30
Location: Nurture Psychology, Parnell AKL
Facilitator: Dr Marion Roberts, Clinical Psychologist
Cost: $600 + GST (snacks included)

CBT-E is one of the leading evidence based treatments for eating disorders, with particularly strong evidence for those with bulimia nervosa presentations. Read more about CBT-E here.

This 2-day training is for registered psychological therapists (e.g. psychologists, psychotherapists, mental health trained allied health professionals - see ANZAED practice & training standards for mental health professionals) who have a desire to work within a clear evidence-based treatment framework with adult & young adult clients with binge eating & purging.

This training workshop will briefly cover the evidence base for CBT-E for bulimia nervosa, followed by diagnostic & suitability considerations/contraindications for CBT-E treatment. The key focus of the training will be on teaching & practical implementation of all 4 stages of the 20-session treatment model, with particularly emphasis on stages 1 & 3. Teaching will include viewing therapy examples of behavioural & cognitive interventions, case based discussions, real client work examples, and the opportunity to practice skills in pairs. While training is focussed on delivery of CBT-E for adult clients with bulimia nervosa, augmentations of the model (working with adolescents, working with binge eating disorder & anorexia nervosa) will be briefly outlined in the final afternoon of training. Paper copies of client handouts and therapy exercises are provided.

Knowledge of & experience working with adult ED is an advantage, but not a pre-requisite. Trainings are in a small group setting in order to facilitate learning, therefore spaces are limited. Enquiries are welcome via hello@nurturepsychology.co.nz or register via the link below.

ADOLESCENT & PARENT TREATMENT (APT):
PARENT WORKSHOPS

COMING IN 2024

These workshops aim to up-skill parents who, together with their child, are engaged in treatment using Adolescent & Parent Treatment (APT).

They will cover both a foundational understanding of eating disorders in adolescents, in addition to teaching skills essential to the practical parent role of re-feeding and emotional support of their young person in treatment, within the context of Adolescent & Parent Treatment (APT). Workshops will complement the individually tailored guidance from your treating psychologist.

We hope to have these workshops running in early 2023. Please dIscuss with your psychologist or via email on hello@nurturepsychology.co.nz if you are interested.
