I am a GP with a special interest in eating disorders and have worked in this field since 2013. For nearly nine years I was part of the team at Tupu Ora (the Auckland regional eating disorders service). My role encompassed medical assessment, monitoring and risk management of outpatients with eating disorders, primarily 18 years and over, including those with very low body weight. In 2022 I joined CREDS (the Wellington regional eating disorders service). As sole GP on the team, I look after the medical needs of patients undergoing intensive treatment for their eating disorder and support the team and other GPs to care for their patients in the community.
When someone is suffering from an eating disorder, there are many complex effects within the physical body. The body’s attempts to adapt and maintain equilibrium can create new and sometimes serious medical instability. These conditions may go unrecognised leading to both immediate and long-term risks. I work alongside patients to help them understand what is happening to their body and use this knowledge to find new motivation for recovery.
I have trained in psychological treatments for anorexia, Family Based Treatment, Supportive Specialist Clinical Management (SSCM) and Maudsley Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA). This enables me to work closely with our psychologists, and other team members, to provide the multi-disciplinary team care that is so important in recovery. I provide medical oversight to those at any stage of their eating disorder recovery, from newly diagnosed through to those with long standing illness helping them remain hopeful even when the journey seems unsurmountable.
I have been a hands-on General Practitioner for nearly forty years, working with every facet of life. I’ve cared for patients right through childhood and teenage years, into adulthood and as elders. I have always had an integrative, holistic and patient centered approach in my work and strive to practice with compassion and respect. I prioritise being a good listener, being non-judgmental and am committed to helping those who struggle with ongoing illness.
I make time to keeping up to date with both general practice and eating disorder research and development, sharing knowledge and experience with others in my field. I hold a role as an assessor for the Medical Council of New Zealand and have tutored medical students in related fields of ethics and professionalism. I balance my working life with plenty of time with family and friends. I enjoy reading, film and live music and love to get out walking and cycling in Wellington.

Professional Practice Fellow (Youth Community Health and Paediatrics) Otago University, Wellington School of Medicine
I am a medical doctor specialising in Child, Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, dedicated to the health and wellbeing of young people aged up to 25 years of age. With over 20 years of experience in eating disorders treatment, I initially trained in Paediatrics before specializing in Adolescent Medicine, completing a fellowship at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. During my fellowship I worked within inpatient, day program and outpatient eating disorder settings. Since returning to New Zealand in 2005, I’ve worked in various clinical settings, including Wellington and Hutt Hospitals, VIBE Youth health clinic and the Central Regional Eating Disorder Service (CREDS).
Eating disorders are complex, impacting multiple body systems. As an eating disorder medical specialist I provide comprehensive care that supports both physical and emotional health. At Wellington Regional Hospital (Te Wao Nui), I lead the paediatric inpatient eating disorder service, overseeing medical stabilization, nutritional rehabilitation, and multidisciplinary care. I also educate medical students and Paediatric trainees about youth health, eating disorders, and adolescent mental health.
In outpatient settings, I support young people with disorders like ARFID, Anorexia Nervosa, and Bulimia Nervosa, providing medical monitoring, assessing growth and puberty, nutritional status and potential medical complications. I work closely with psychologists to assess medical risks, offer psychoeducation, and guide investigations, medications, and treatment plans. I integrate Family-Based Treatment (FBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) into my practice.
Many young people also experience anxiety, depression, OCD, or ADHD, requiring careful coordination of medical and psychological care. I provide specialist input on medication management, considering benefits and risks in the context of eating disorders. My inpatient experience equips me to assess risk levels and facilitate seamless transitions between care settings, ensuring continuous support throughout recovery.
I take a holistic, developmentally informed approach, collaborating with patients, families, and colleagues to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care. Dedicated to early intervention, I advocate for recovery, even when patients find it difficult to hold onto hope. Witnessing their resilience and recovery is an honour. Through my partnership with Nurture Psychology, I am able to provide specialist collaborative care, sharing their commitment to walk alongside young people and their families with empathy, expertise and hope.

Jing Yuan Liu
Registered Dietitian
MHSc (Nutrition & Dietetics), BSc (Food Science & Nutrition).
New Zealand Registered Dietitian (NZRD)
Prescriber Endorsement (Dietitians Board New Zealand)
I was born and raised in Auckland, and completed my dietetic training through The University of Auckland. I began my professional journey working in community-based mental health and addiction services across Tamaki Makaurau, before transitioning into a specialist regional eating disorder service (Tupu Ora). My experience in eating disorders involves working with both youth and adults across a variety of settings including a residential unit, community outpatients, as well as inpatient care.
I am passionate about the life-changing impact that nutrition can have on our minds and bodies, with a special interest in supporting people experiencing eating disorders and mental health conditions. My approach is always recovery-focused and tailored to meet the individual’s personal circumstances. As a dietitian working in this space, I have a HAES (Health At Every Size)-informed approach, and enjoy supporting clients to incorporate intuitive eating principles as part of their recovery, when appropriate. Through my experience working with those across a range of conditions, I have gained a deep understanding of the complexity and impact that eating disorders can have – not only on the individual, but also those close to them. Therefore, I also support the involvement of friends and whanau, when appropriate, as part of a more holistic approach for my clients.
I have always enjoyed working collaboratively with psychologists and the wider multi-disciplinary team to ensure I provide the best care for my patients. My experience in eating disorders includes working alongside therapists providing evidence-based eating disorder treatments (e.g. FBT, CBT-E, SSCM). In my work at Nurture Psychology, I also enjoy supporting young people & their families in the context of Adolescent & Parent Treatment (APT). Aside from working with those experiencing anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, I am also interested in working with fussy eating/ARFID to provide personalised nutritional assessment & recommendations to support psychology work. I have completed training in FBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Trauma-informed Care, as well as the Monash FODMAP Diet and IBS course for Dietitians.
Despite its challenges, I find my work in the eating disorder space extremely meaningful and rewarding. I love being able to truly connect with my clients through their individual journeys - helping them heal their relationship with food, and renourish their bodies to live life to the fullest!
